Coming of Age in the 90’s- A Soundtrack and Musings… Adventures in Fashion and Travel

90's India Cotton Gauze Sarong

A Soundtrack and Musings…Adventures in Fashion and Travel

Coming of Age in the 90’s.

“Back in those days everything was simpler and more confused…” J.Morrison

Pool side with rock stars on my mind…one leather clad front-man in particular…Let’s just say I was a bit of a wild child (1994). The evening before my flight to Spain I had gone for a ride to stop by a party…The Doors blasting on the car stereo.

“I just have to go out in this car with these people…I’ll be back in just a little while” J.Morrison

I made it home just in time the next day to throw a few outfits in a bag and catch my bus to the airport… wild child.

I made it and now …(musings and nostalgia)…here I am pool side in Costa Del Sol, Spain… I bought a pack of Duscados Cigarettes from the vending machine- tied my new pink Indian cotton gauze sarong around my waist and made my way to the bar.

(I still have the sarong, it is looking a little worse for wear after 30 years…see above photo, I was thinking of having it framed )

Coming of Age in the 90’s.

Being a seventeen year old wild child…it seemed completely normal to order a Singapore Sling at 10am, Why the hell not…right!

I had been completely obsessed with the Doors, Morrison in particular and embarked on a deep dive into research…I had read just about everything I could get my hands on about Morrison and The Doors. This explains the Singapore Sling…a Morrison favorite, in case you were wondering how a seventeen year old girl knew about this specific cocktail. (*recipe below)

The Doors- (Oliver Stone) movie had hit theaters in 1991 and The Doors were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993…these events led to a resurgence in popularity of the band that seemed to hold strong for years.

Anyway…I was also fascinated with Morrison’s long time girlfriend Pamela Courson who had a boutique in LA called Themis… referenced in the song Love Street as “the store where the creatures meet”. The Doors.

This deep dive specifically with Pam and Themis runs deep, influencing my style, vintage collection and eventually leading to my own boutique Raca Rara Vintage…

This on going research continues to lead me to other muses such as Tere Tereba, Eve Babitz and her sister Miriam Babitz, of Mirandi Leather… (more on Eve Babitz to come…my latest obsession).

Coming of Age in the 90’s.

Maybe I’m writing about my days in Spain as a wild child because now at 47 I can’t help but think…things have really gotten pretty fuckin boring around here… I need to liven things up, maybe I’m overdue for another adventure.

Or maybe it is just part of my creative process…or the inevitable mid-life identity crisis! Haha…

Who knows? So, for now… I’ll blast some tunes that bring me back to

“those days when everything was simpler and more confused…back when we were stoned immaculate”…J.Morrison

Here is my Soundtrack/Set List…that I am jamming out to as I create my new collection… Click the Link to listen to my selections, The Doors, of course…also a little Janes Addiction, Black Crowes, Violent Femmes and other tunes from my wild youth… Enjoy.

And while you listen… Enjoy a Singapore Sling (Pool side with Duscados and Morrison anyone?)

Gin, Bitters, Lime, Cherry Brandy, Grenadine- shake vigorously and pour over ice…garnish with pineapple and a cherry

(I don’t smoke or drink alcohol anymore so I make a mocktail version with Ritual Spirit Free Gin and skip the Brandy…)

Rock On Friends…
