Vintage Shopping Tips: Sustainable Fashion

Well made, and often one of a kind, vintage shopping is how you can find that crowning jewel for your wardrobe.

Vintage Shopping- Five Tips to Consider Before You Hit the Thrift:

  1. Get Inspired- Before you head to the Thrift Shops you need to have a vision- What outfit are you looking for and for what event? Do you have a personal aesthetic? Make a list. (I love the app Vogue Runway... it is free and is full of inspiration from current runway shows. Scroll through to see what inspires you then keep that in mind when you begin your hunt.)

  2. Be Specific, Perform a Quality Check- Let's say you are in need of an amazing dress for a special event, you have an idea of what you want because you have done some research. When you arrive at the thrift go directly to the dress section. Look for quality fabric, cut and shape, check for damage- lining, under the arms, holes in the pockets...are all the buttons there? Do the zippers work? Does it need alterations? Don't forget to check the section with the nightgowns as well. I have found some fantastic pieces in unexpected places!

  3. When Vintage Shopping Ignore the Sizing- Vintage sizing is much different than our current sizing system. Know your measurements, keep them in a note on your phone. Try items on if possible. If not bring a small tape measure with you in your pocket and measure the item at the shop. This goes for shopping online as well...if you are interested in a vintage item online be sure to ask the seller for measurements if they are not noted in the listing.

  4. Quality over Quantity- When it comes to vintage shopping a little goes a long way. One amazing vintage piece mixed with your modern favorites can take an outfit to a new level. Let the vintage item be the jewel of the look. Avoid head to toe vintage which can sometimes create a "costume" like effect.

  5. Effortless Style- There really is no such thing as effortless style. If you want to find quality vintage you have to be willing to put in the time. Vintage shopping is a marathon not a sprint.

For me it's the thrill of the hunt, but if you don't want to spend your free time searching through second hand shops... check out the selection at Raca Rara Vintage.
